Troop 142 – You Can’t Ride In My Little Red Wagon

Four new Troop 142 pages posted. Campfires at Boy Scouts were often spent singing songs, telling ghost stories, and performing creaky old skits. Also, marshmallows.

    Mike,

TCJ made mention of your excellent use of subtext in this work–everything is so tense and telling. What strategies do you use to get these storytelling effects?

    Hey Ben,

That’s a flattering question to be asked… I’m trying to come up with a good answer…

The best answer I can give is that I don’t script my comics ahead of time. I know where the story is going, but I write it as I go*. In my opinion, this approach is good for things like subtext, since I’m never committing the script to paper, I’m constantly writing it and rewriting it in my head. I feel like if I put it all into script form first, then I’d stop writing, and just focus on getting it drawn.

    * I write notes and stuff. Also, in this story, I’ve drawn tons of complete pages that I’ve then scrapped. It’s not really the most efficient way to work…
