The Ink Panthers Show! #86 Heroes and Villains

Alex and Mike answer a call from the Fanther hotline and other listener questions, only one of which has to do with The Thing’s thing. Alex wonders about the most ethical way to raise a child, which leads to a chat about bullies and bullying in this internet-age.

And don’t forget about the Live Ink Panthers Show, scheduled to take place at the MoCCA Arts Festival on April 10th, at 3:30PM. Come join us, won’t you?

Seventh-Grade Fumetti

OK, this is silly, but maybe funny.

These scans are from my 1989 Junior High School yearbook. You see evidence of my wicked sense of humor in these hilarious word balloons. I imagine my fellow 14-year olds and I thought these were the absolute height of hilarity at the time. We must have fancied ourselves such clever satirists. Satirists of what, I am not sure. 7th grade? Kids? Something.

Look at how we really stuck it to everyone! Nobody was safe!!

Bleargh!!!!

Ain’t No Power: 1/28/2002

This is the beginnings of a new project. It’s just starting to take shape, so I can’t say exactly what it will end up being. I’ll keep updating as I make progress.

The Ink Panthers Show! #85 Gruntin’ with Runton

I know every week we promise a jam-packed show, but this week we really have got a show literally packed with jam. First, some follow-up on last week’s discussion with standup comedian Adam Conover, including the audio of him performing Mike’s soon-to-be-classic “The Thing’s Thing” joke. Then, like a bird-of-prey, Owly cartoonist Andy Runton, swoops back into The Panther’s Lair to talk craft and what’s meaningful to him as a creator. After that, Alex has some news about sandwiches, and Mike asks the tough-questions when it comes to picking out the perfect song to sing at a Karaoke outing. What song could he possibly choose that would make it tough to look him in the eye the next day? Find out here.

And if all that wasn’t enough, there’s the announcement of a new Live Ink Panthers Show, scheduled to take place at the MoCCA Arts Festival on April 10th. So, tune in to hear some early details about that.

The Ink Panthers Show! #84 Comedy Conversation with Adam Conover

We’ve got something a little different this week: aspiring stand-up comedian, Adam Conover, creeps into The Lair to give us a little insight into what it’s like breaking into that world. Is it something Mike could realistically do as a casual just-for-fun fall-back career, or is it more likely something you have to work at and work at for little or no reward, just like everything else in this miserable life? I know which answer Mike is hoping to hear…

What’s Hanging Up?

At the moment I’ve got a pretty nice home studio all setup. It got moved into the bigger bedroom in the apartment, based on the condition that the child is allowed to come in and play in here sometimes. Also, some of her stuff is kept here.

Just recently, I hung up a bunch of pictures that I’ve gathered from various cons and stuff over the years. It makes the place look nice. Here are photos:

This is the side of the room with the drawing table. From Left to Right are: a print by my friend Matt Crawford, lead singer of the band The Match & The Moth; a print by Jamie Tanner; a page of original art from Josh Cotter’s Skyscrapers of the Midwest; (TOP) a letterpress print by Ben Catmull; (BOTTOM) a print by Dustin Harbin (which actually has a little picture of me on it, which Dustin took the time to color in all nice like); and a picture by Ed Piskor.

Here’s the other side of the room, with the computer (a.k.a the side of the room I spend all my time on). Left to Right, here’s what’s up over there: two Joe Lambert pictures (one of them being the Commemorative 9-Year AdHouse-iversary calendar); a drawing my friend Alex Robinson made for me when I finished Freddie & Me; a print of a Kate Beaton comic about teenagers; a piece of original art by Vanessa Davis; and the same Jordan Crane print that I imagine every cartoonist probably has at this point, as ubiquitous as the Pulp Fiction poster was in college dorm rooms in 1995.

And that’s what’s Hanging Up!

Alex has been to Austin, Texas for the STAPLE convention, so he tells us all about it; then Mike has been to the circus and he’s got lots to say about that – mostly stuff along the lines of “Do the Elephants really enjoy standing on a ball and being made to sit in a seat?” It’s sure to be Fun for the Whole Family!! Goodnight Max

This story is going to appear in a foreign-language collection of all of my Jack & Max comics, in which context it may make more sense. Jack & Max are brothers with super-powers: Jack has telekinesis, and Max can teleport, and all they do is bicker, squabble, and fight.

The Ink Panthers Show! #82 Beastly

A tale as old as time… come listen to Mike and Alex inside The Panther’s Lair, discussing a potpourri of Hot Topics, including: the announcement that Alex will be a Special Guest at this year’s MoCCA Festival; the movie Beastly, which Alex has not seen; the TV Show Luther, which Alex also has not seen, and the movie The Running Man, which Alex saw, but can’t really remember all that well.
